💡 Did You Know?

🏫
The oldest restaurant building in Stellenbosch dates to 1710. D'Ouwe Werf on Church Street has been serving travellers for over 300 years — originally as a coaching inn. The current restaurant preserves the original cellar and yellowwood beams.
🍚
Stellenbosch invented the "wine farm lunch" concept. In the 1990s, estates like Spier and Tokara started pairing vineyard views with chef-driven menus. Today it's a global wine tourism standard — but it started here, on the R44.
📚
The town has more chefs per square kilometre than Cape Town. Stellenbosch University's hospitality programme feeds a pipeline of young chefs into the 100+ restaurants, creating one of the most competitive dining scenes in Africa.
🌱
"Boerewors" was first commercially produced here. While every SA town claims boerewors heritage, Stellenbosch's first butchery (est. 1710) was among the earliest to standardise the recipe that would become the national dish.

🔒 Locals Know This

🕵
The "student price" trick. Many restaurants near campus (Bird Street, Andringa Street) have unlisted lunch specials for under R80. Ask for the daily special — it's not always on the menu board.
🌟
Tuesday is the best night out. The town empties of tourists mid-week, but students keep it alive. Several restaurants run Tuesday specials — De Warenmarkt does 2-for-1 pizzas, Craft Wheat & Hops does R30 craft pints.
🚗
Free parking after 5pm. Municipal meters on Dorp Street and Church Street are free after 17:00 and all day Sunday. The Eikestad Mall lot charges until 21:00 though — avoid it for dinner.
🌾
The off-menu wine trick. Ask your waiter "what's the estate wine that isn't on the list?" — many restaurants hold back allocations from nearby farms. At Jardine, this once produced a 2019 Kanonkop that never made the public list.
Best coffee isn't in a cafe. The roastery at Delaire Graff (top of Helshoogte Pass) makes the best flat white in Stellenbosch — but nobody goes there for coffee because they think it's wine-only. It's not. And the view is free.
Stellenbosch is one of South Africa's most celebrated food destinations, where centuries-old Cape Dutch architecture meets innovative farm-to-table dining. The town's restaurant scene draws from the surrounding winelands — expect seasonal menus paired with estate wines, many of them available nowhere else. From Dorp Street's bistros to hidden vineyard kitchens, dining here ranges from relaxed wood-fired pizza on a wine farm to multi-course degustation menus that rival anything in Cape Town. The Afrikaans and international culinary influences create a unique flavour you won't find elsewhere in the country.
