💡 Did You Know?

🏫
Oom Samie Se Winkel has been trading since 1904. This cluttered general dealer at 84 Dorp Street is Stellenbosch's oldest continuously operating shop. The tin ceiling, wooden floors, and shelves crammed with everything from sweets to antique kitchenware haven't changed in over a century. It started as a trading post for local farmers and still sells homemade konfyt and biltong alongside tourist curiosities.
🎨
Stellenbosch has the highest density of art galleries outside of Cape Town. The University's visual arts programme has produced generations of South African artists, many of whom stayed and opened studios. On Dorp Street alone, you can walk past a dozen galleries within 500 metres β€” from contemporary African art to Cape Dutch antique prints.
🌱
The Saturday Root44 Market draws 5,000+ visitors weekly. What started as a small farm stall on the R44 highway in 2011 has become one of the Western Cape's largest outdoor markets. Set on the Audacia Wine Estate with Helderberg Mountain as a backdrop, it features 200+ stalls, live music, and a dedicated craft beer garden.

Dorp Street Gallery Walk

Walk the 1.2km stretch of Dorp Street between Andringa and Helshoogte Road. Twelve galleries and antique shops line both sides, housed in restored Cape Dutch buildings from the 1700s. Several offer free wine while you browse. Best on a Thursday evening when some galleries host openings.

Vintage Hunting on Plein Street

Plein Street between Bird and Ryneveld has three second-hand shops that locals guard jealously. Student move-out season (November-December) is when the best furniture and designer clothing appears. Prices are a fraction of Cape Town's vintage shops. Cash preferred.

Unique

📚
Student thrift shops on Bird Street. Three charity shops within 200m of each other sell donated clothing, books, and homeware from the university community. The Stellenbosch Hospice Shop on the corner of Bird and Plein gets fresh stock every Monday. Designer labels from wealthy students at R30-R80 per item.
📅
Saturday is the best day for craft markets β€” but Sunday is better value. Root44 runs Saturday only, but the smaller Blaauwklippen Family Market on Sunday has the same artisans with fewer tourists. Stallholders are more willing to offer deals on the last day of the weekend.
💰
Haggling is not part of the culture here β€” with one exception. Fixed prices are the norm at shops and most market stalls. But at the Stellenbosch Saturday flea market behind the Braak (the town square), vendors expect gentle negotiation. Offer 20% less and meet in the middle. Don't push harder than that.
🌟
The Christmas Night Market in December is extraordinary. Dorp Street closes to traffic on the first Friday of December for the annual night market. Over 100 stalls, mulled wine, carols, and fairy lights strung between the oaks. It's the one event where all of Stellenbosch turns out. Arrive by 17:00 for parking.
🚗
Eikestad Mall has the cheapest parking in town. R5 per hour, but the real trick is shopping at Checkers β€” they validate 2 hours of parking with any purchase. Pick up your groceries there and walk into town for the boutiques.
Stellenbosch shopping is a mix of oak-shaded boutiques, century-old traders, and vibrant weekend markets that reflects the town's unique blend of history, university culture, and wine country wealth. Dorp Street β€” the longest surviving street of Cape Dutch architecture in South Africa β€” is the commercial heart, with independent galleries, antique dealers, and fashion boutiques occupying 18th-century buildings. Beyond the historic core, the Saturday and Sunday markets have become destinations in themselves, drawing visitors from Cape Town for artisan crafts, local food, and the convivial atmosphere of open-air trading under the Winelands mountains.
