💡 Did You Know?

🌳
Vergelegen's five camphor trees were declared national monuments. Planted around 1700 by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel, these enormous trees are among the oldest cultivated trees in South Africa. You walk past them on the way to the Camphors restaurant — named after them, naturally. The estate grounds alone are worth the R20 entry.
🍫
The Lourensford wine-and-chocolate pairing is one of the Cape's best. Lourensford estate partnered with a local chocolatier to match their wine range to handcrafted pralines. The pairing (R120pp) is more popular than their wine tasting, and the Saturday market on the estate grounds draws 3,000+ visitors.
📍
Somerset West is the gateway between city and Winelands. Sitting where the N2 highway meets the R44 wine route, it's the first Winelands town you reach from Cape Town. Many visitors drive straight through to Stellenbosch — which is exactly why the restaurants here are less crowded and often better value.

🕵
The N2 off-ramp restaurants tourists miss. The Broadway Boulevard exit off the N2 leads to a strip of restaurants (along the R44 toward Stellenbosch) that most Cape Town day-trippers blow past. Places like Steffanie's and The Avontuur Estate restaurant are 2 minutes off the highway but feel like countryside dining.
🌟
Victoria Street cafes are the real scene. While tourists head to the wine estates, locals eat on Victoria Street in the old village centre. The cafes here are owner-run, prices are 30-40% lower than estate restaurants, and the food is often made by the same calibre of chef who couldn't afford Stellenbosch rent.
🍖
Sunday roast tradition. Somerset West has a strong British-heritage Sunday roast culture. Several restaurants (Steffanie's, the Lord Charles Hotel) do a proper roast with all the trimmings every Sunday from 12:00. Book by Friday — families book these tables weeks in advance.
🚗
Free parking at Lourensford. The Lourensford estate has free, unlimited parking — even on Saturday market days. Compare this to Stellenbosch where you'll circle for 20 minutes and pay R8/hour. Park at Lourensford, eat at the market, then drive 15 minutes to Stellenbosch if you want to explore further.
Somerset West sits at the foot of the Helderberg mountain, the gateway town where Cape Town's suburban sprawl gives way to the wine route. For years it was a drive-through on the way to Stellenbosch — but a new generation of estate restaurants and independent kitchens has turned it into a food destination in its own right. The town's dining stretches from the historic Vergelegen estate (1700) to the buzzing Lourensford Saturday market, with Victoria Street's cafe strip in between. What Somerset West offers that its neighbours don't is accessibility: closer to Cape Town, easier parking, lower prices, and the same quality of wine-country produce on the plate. The Helderberg sunsets don't hurt either.

A Victoria Street institution — Steffanie's occupies a heritage building with high ceilings, exposed brick, and a vine-covered courtyard. The menu is modern South African with European technique: think slow-braised oxtail, line fish with beurre blanc, and a wine list that leans Helderberg and Stellenbosch. The Sunday roast is a weekly tradition for local families. R180-R340pp.

A glass-and-steel restaurant cantilevered into the hillside above False Bay, with arguably the most dramatic view of any restaurant in the Western Cape. The biodynamic estate grows everything organically; horses work the vineyards. The drive up Sir Lowry's Pass is part of the experience.
