🍷
Wellington's wine route is one of SA's oldest. While newer than Stellenbosch, Wellington's first formal wine route was established in the 1990s when estates like Diemersfontein, Welvanpas, and Dunstone opened their doors. Today it includes 25+ members producing everything from pinotage to chenin blanc.
🌱
The Huguenot Tunnel passes directly under Wellington. The 3.9km tunnel connecting Paarl to Worcester runs beneath the Hawequa Mountains — you can drive over it on Bain's Kloof or through it on the N1. Both routes are spectacular.
📚
Wellington was originally called "Wagenmakersvallei" (Wagonmaker's Valley). The town's early settlers made wagons for the Cape Colony here, using indigenous hardwood from the surrounding mountains. It was renamed in 1840 after the Duke of Wellington.

🕵
The KWV brandy tour is genuinely world-class. Many visitors skip it because "brandy isn't wine" — but the cellar tour is more impressive than most wine estate tours. The 20-year potstill brandy consistently beats Cognac in international competitions.
🌟
Harvest Festival is the best time to visit. Wellington's annual harvest festival (late February/early March) features grape-stomping, live music, and estate-hopping by tractor. It's far less commercialised than Franschhoek's festivals.
🚗
Do the Bovlei loop anti-clockwise. Start from the R301, visit estates heading towards Bain's Kloof, then turn around. The afternoon light on the mountains heading back towards Wellington is spectacular for photos.
Wellington packs brandy heritage, uncrowded wine estates, and one of South Africa's most spectacular mountain passes into a single day trip from Cape Town. The town is 75km from the city — close enough for a morning departure, far enough to feel like you've escaped. The KWV brandy cellar alone is worth the drive, but combine it with 2-3 wine tastings on the Bovlei road and a scenic drive through Bain's Kloof, and you have one of the best day-out itineraries in the Western Cape. Population: ~70,000.
