💡 Did You Know?

🚆
The Franschhoek Wine Tram uses a restored 1890s tram car. The vintage open-sided tramcar that runs through the vineyards was modelled on San Francisco cable cars and Cape Town's original tram network. Where tracks don't reach, a matching tram-bus takes over — so the route covers the entire valley without you needing a car.
🚗
The Franschhoek Motor Museum has a 1898 Beeston Motor Tricycle. Housed in the L'Ormarins wine estate buildings, this collection spans over 220 vehicles from an 1898 tricycle to modern supercars. It was assembled by the late Johann Rupert and includes rare pre-war Bugattis, Alfa Romeos, and one of only 36 Ferrari 250 GTOs ever made.
🇫
The Huguenot Monument was designed to face France. The 3-arched monument at the end of Huguenot Road was unveiled in 1948 to mark the 250th anniversary of Huguenot arrival. The central female figure holds a Bible and broken chain, facing northwest — directly toward France, 9,000km away.

Chocolate & Wine Pairing

Solms-Delta Heritage Walk

Solms-Delta wine farm runs a free heritage walk through its Museum van de Caab — telling the story of the Khoi people, slaves, and settlers who shaped this valley long before tourists arrived. It's the most honest historical account in the Winelands. Tastings afterwards include a traditional Cape fermenter range.

🕵
The Wine Tram's Blue Line is the best route. All 8 tram lines visit good estates, but the Blue Line covers Rickety Bridge, Franschhoek Cellar, Grande Provence, and Holden Manz — which have the best combination of tasting rooms, restaurants, and views. Green Line is quieter if you dislike crowds.
🌟
First Saturday is market day. The Franschhoek Village Market runs the first Saturday of every month at the town hall on Huguenot Road. Local cheese, biltong, preserves, and handmade crafts from valley artisans. Arrives early — by 11am the olive oil and the sourdough are usually gone.
🎨
The Franschhoek Literary Festival (May) is world-class. Held every May, this 3-day festival at various village venues hosts international and South African authors, panel discussions, and book signings. It's small enough to bump into writers at coffee shops between sessions. Festival passes sell out fast.
🚗
The Motor Museum is quietest at opening time. The Franschhoek Motor Museum at L'Ormarins gets tour buses from 11am. Arrive at 10am sharp, and you'll have the Ferrari and Bugatti halls almost to yourself. Combined ticket with wine tasting: R120.
Franschhoek is the kind of place where a single day isn't enough. South Africa's culinary capital — the "French Corner" settled by Huguenot refugees in 1688 — offers far more than restaurants and wine. The valley's vintage Wine Tram winds through vineyards to 23 estates. The Huguenot Memorial Museum traces three centuries of history. Art galleries line Huguenot Road from end to end. And then there are the tastings: wine, cheese, chocolate, olive oil, and charcuterie — each one a lesson in the valley's obsession with flavour. All of this happens against a backdrop of mountains so dramatic they make you stop mid-sentence. Here's where to start.

The valley's signature attraction: a hop-on-hop-off experience combining a vintage open-sided tram with a matching tram-bus that covers 8 routes through the Franschhoek vineyards. Each line stops at 5-6 wine estates where you can taste, eat, or just admire the views before catching the next tram. The Blue and Red lines are the most popular. The definitive telling of the Huguenot story in South Africa. The museum traces how 277 French Protestant refugees fled religious persecution after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 and were settled in this valley by the VOC. Displays include original family Bibles, genealogical records, and period furniture. The adjacent Huguenot Monument — three soaring arches with a female figure holding a Bible and broken chain — is free to visit and one of the most photographed landmarks in the Winelands.

A Franschhoek institution since 2001, this bean-to-bar chocolatier on the main road offers tastings, chocolate-and-wine pairings, and a glass-walled production area where you can watch truffles being hand-rolled. The single-origin Tanzania 72% bar is exceptional. The tasting experience (R80pp for 8 samples) is a perfect 45-minute break between wine farms. Their hot chocolate — made from real melted couverture — is the best in the valley.
