💡 Did You Know?

Bain's Kloof is one of only 3 mountain passes in SA that is a National Monument. Andrew Geddes Bain's 1853 engineering masterpiece crosses the Witzenberg range without a single modern retaining wall. The dry-stone construction has held for 170 years.
🐦
The Hawequa Mountains host the Cape's largest breeding colony of Verreaux's eagles. You can spot these massive raptors circling the cliffs above Bain's Kloof — their 2-metre wingspan is unmistakable. Best viewing from Eerste Tol picnic site.
🌊
Wellington's rock pools are the Winelands' best-kept swimming secret. While tourists queue at Franschhoek's pools, locals drive 15 minutes into Bain's Kloof for crystal-clear mountain pools with nobody around. The water stays cold year-round.

🕵
The best rock pools are between Eerste Tol and Tweede Tol. Most visitors stop at the first picnic site. Drive past it — the pools get deeper and less crowded the further you go. The third pullover spot (unmarked) has a 3-metre deep pool.
🌟
Avoid Bain's Kloof on summer weekends. The pass gets packed with day-trippers from Cape Town in December-January. Go Tuesday-Thursday or arrive before 8am on weekends. Winter is quieter and more dramatic.
🚗
Check road closures before you go. CapeNature occasionally closes Bain's Kloof after heavy rain or rockfalls. Call the Wellington tourism office or check CapeNature's website before driving up.
Wellington is the outdoor adventure capital of the Cape Winelands — while Stellenbosch and Franschhoek focus on food and wine, Wellington has Bain's Kloof Pass, the Hawequa Wilderness, and some of the best mountain biking in the Western Cape. The town sits where the valley meets the mountains, giving you vineyard cycling in the morning and mountain hiking in the afternoon. Bain's Kloof alone justifies the 75km drive from Cape Town — a 170-year-old engineering marvel with rock pools, waterfalls, and hiking trails that rival anything in the province.
