💡 Did You Know?

🐋
Hermanus is the only town in the world with an official whale crier. Since 1992, the town has employed a whale crier who patrols the cliff path blowing a kelp horn to alert visitors when whales are spotted. He carries a board showing the latest sighting locations.
🏙
The Old Harbour is one of the only surviving examples of an early South African fishing port. Declared a national monument, the harbour dates to the 1850s and still has the original slipway where fishermen launched their boats by hand into Walker Bay.
🌿
Fernkloof Nature Reserve contains more plant species per hectare than almost anywhere on Earth. The 1,800-hectare reserve above the town is part of the Cape Floral Kingdom (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and hosts over 1,600 plant species — more than the entire United Kingdom.

Follow the Whale Crier

The world's only whale crier patrols the cliff path from July to November, blowing his kelp horn when whales surface. Follow his alerts for the best land-based whale watching on the planet.

Best For

Cliff Path Sunset Walk

The 12km cliff path from New Harbour to Grotto Beach offers uninterrupted ocean views, with whales breaching below in season. The stretch past Voelklip is quietest at golden hour.

Unique

Hemel-en-Aarde Wine Route

Three wards producing world-class cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Creation, Hamilton Russell, and Bouchard Finlayson are standouts. Some estates offer whale-watching from their tasting rooms.

Hidden Gem

Shark Cage Diving at Gansbaai

Just 30 minutes from Hermanus, Gansbaai's Shark Alley offers Great White encounters. Most operators include hotel pickup from Hermanus. Best visibility: Feb–Sep.

🕵
Skip the whale boat — watch from the cliffs. The cliff path between the Old Harbour and Kwaaiwater gives you closer views than most boat tours. Whales come within 20 metres of the rocks, and you don't need to deal with seasickness. Sievers Point and Kraal Rock are the prime spots.
🌟
October Whale Festival is chaos — come in September instead. The annual festival draws massive crowds. Locals prefer September when the whales are just as active but accommodation is half the price and restaurants actually have tables available.
🍷
The best Hemel-en-Aarde wines aren't at the big estates. Tiny producers like Storm, Ataraxia, and Restless River make exceptional wines with minimal tasting fees. The Upper Hemel-en-Aarde ward is less touristy and produces the best Pinot Noir.
🚗
Take the R44 from Kleinmond, not the R43 from Bot River. The R44 coastal route via Betty's Bay and Stony Point penguin colony is one of the most scenic drives in South Africa — and it's barely longer than the inland route.
Hermanus is one of the best places on Earth to watch whales from shore, a laid-back coastal town 120km southeast of Cape Town in the Overberg region. Between July and November, Southern right whales come into Walker Bay to calve, and you can watch them breach and play from the cliff path that runs the length of the town. But Hermanus is far more than whales — the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley produces world-class Pinot Noir, Fernkloof Nature Reserve hosts extraordinary fynbos biodiversity, the Old Harbour preserves a living piece of South African fishing history, and the village centre has a thriving food and coffee culture that rivals towns twice its size.
