💡 Did You Know?

The harbour cafe tradition started with fishermen's morning rituals. Gordon's Bay's small harbour has been home to a fishing community since the early 1900s. Fishermen returning from dawn catches would gather at the harbour wall for coffee before heading home. When the first proper cafe opened at the harbour in the 1980s, it simply formalised what locals had been doing for decades. Today, the early-morning harbour coffee is still the town's most authentic experience.
🚗
Clarence Drive stop-off culture is a real thing. The R44 (Clarence Drive) from Gordon's Bay to Rooi-Els is one of South Africa's most scenic coastal roads — cliffs, ocean, and baboons. Locals and road-trippers have made it a tradition to grab a takeaway coffee in Gordon's Bay before tackling the drive. The cafes on Beach Road are positioned perfectly for this — it's the last caffeine stop before 30km of wilderness.
🐳
You can watch a whale breach from your cafe table. Between July and November, southern right whales enter False Bay to calve in the shallow, warmer waters. Gordon's Bay harbour sits right on the bay, and the whales sometimes come within 200m of the harbour wall. The Harbour Cafe has unobstructed views — bring binoculars and patience, and you may witness a full breach over your cappuccino.

✨ Only-in-Gordon's Bay Experiences

Only Here

Harbour Sunrise Coffee

Arrive at the harbour by 06:30. The fishing boats are heading out, the sun is rising over the Hottentots Holland mountains across the bay, and the water turns gold. The Harbour Cafe opens early for exactly this crowd. A R32 flat white with this view is one of the best-value experiences on the False Bay coast. Bring a jacket — the harbour gets the morning breeze.

Best For

Bikini Beach Morning

A 07:00 swim at Bikini Beach (sheltered, calm, Blue Flag) followed by a 2-minute walk to Bikini Beach Coffee on the promenade. The water is cold (16-20°C) but invigorating. The coffee is hot and good. Towel around your shoulders, sandy feet, ocean salt on your skin — this is the Gordon's Bay morning ritual at its purest. Free parking along the beachfront.

Unique

Clarence Drive Road-Trip Stop

Pick up a takeaway flat white from The Coffee Lab on Beach Road, then drive the R44 Clarence Drive towards Betty's Bay. Sheer cliffs, crashing waves, and occasionally whales or dolphins below. Stop at the Steenbras River Mouth lookout (10km) for the full panorama. The coffee keeps you company on one of the world's great coastal drives. Allow 90 minutes return.

Whale-Watching Cappuccino

July to November, bring binoculars to the Harbour Cafe and claim a table facing the bay. Southern right whales surface, blow, and occasionally breach within clear view. The locals treat it as casual background entertainment — "there's another one" between sips. No boat trip needed, no entrance fee. Just coffee, patience, and the world's most spectacular cafe wildlife.

🍛
The fish & chips shop also makes the best espresso. This sounds absurd, but the small fish shop on the harbour approach (next to the slipway) installed a proper espresso machine in 2023 and now pulls a better shot than half the dedicated cafes. Double espresso R22, and yes, you can get a hake and chips alongside it. The fishermen knew about this before anyone else.
🌅
Sunday morning harbour is magical. By 08:00 on a Sunday, the harbour wall fills with locals walking dogs, families with coffee cups, and kayakers launching from the slipway. The light is soft, the bay is calm, and the mountains across the water are sharp and blue. It's the most peaceful hour in Gordon's Bay. By 10:00, the day-trippers arrive and the spell breaks.
🔎
Bring binoculars July to November. Whale season in Gordon's Bay is exceptional, and the harbour offers some of the closest land-based whale watching in the Western Cape. A compact pair of binoculars turns a coffee at the Harbour Cafe into a wildlife safari. Dolphins (year-round) and seals (always) are bonus sightings. The whales are often visible with the naked eye, but binoculars reveal the detail.
🚗
Parking is never a problem. Unlike Kalk Bay or Muizenberg, Gordon's Bay has ample free parking everywhere — at the harbour, along Beach Road, at Bikini Beach. Even on peak summer weekends, you'll find a spot within a 2-minute walk of any cafe. No meters, no time limits, no car guards demanding R20.
The Roastery on Beach Road is the locals' pick. Tourists gravitate to the harbour and Bikini Beach, but Gordon's Bay residents queue at the small Roastery halfway up Beach Road. They roast weekly in small batches, the flat white (R32) is the cheapest good coffee in town, and the owner remembers your name after two visits. No view, but the best beans.
Gordon's Bay is where Cape coffee culture meets the ocean. This small coastal town of 15,000 sits on the eastern shore of False Bay, sheltered by the Hottentots Holland mountains and facing some of the most dramatic sunrises in the Western Cape. The cafe scene is modest — 4-5 spots rather than 30 — but what it lacks in volume it makes up in character. You'll drink a R32 flat white at the harbour wall while fishing boats bob beside you. Between July and November, whales breach in the bay within view of your table. Bikini Beach offers a swim-then-coffee ritual that Stellenbosch simply cannot match. This is not a destination for latte art competitions or single-origin geekery — it's a place where coffee tastes better because the setting is extraordinary.

The most "specialty coffee" of Gordon's Bay's offerings, positioned on Beach Road with a partial ocean view. The Coffee Lab takes its beans seriously — a rotating selection from Cape Town roasters, pulled on a well-maintained La Marzocca. The flat white (R38) is excellent, and they do a proper pour-over for R35. The ideal takeaway stop before tackling Clarence Drive. Small interior, better terrace. Parking directly outside.

The soul of Gordon's Bay coffee culture. Perched right on the harbour, with fishing boats moored 5 metres from your table and the entire sweep of False Bay ahead. The coffee is good (not great) — a solid house blend, properly extracted. Flat white R32. But you're here for the setting: sunrise light hitting the mountains, seals on the breakwater, and whales in season. The fishermen's morning crowd arrives at 06:30. Join them.

Right on the Bikini Beach promenade, 50 metres from the sand. This is a beach cafe that happens to make decent coffee rather than a coffee shop with a view — and that's exactly the appeal. Flat white R30, iced coffee R35. The post-swim crowd piles in from 07:30, dripping and happy. The smoothies are better than the pastries. The view across the sheltered Blue Flag beach to the mountains is the real menu item. Casual, sandy-feet friendly.

The locals' favourite, tucked halfway up Beach Road with no ocean view but the best beans in town. The owner roasts weekly in small batches — usually a blend of Ethiopian and Brazilian — and the result is noticeably fresher than the bigger cafes. Flat white R32, double espresso R20, bag of beans R85/250g. The space is tiny (6 tables) and the decor is simple, but the regulars wouldn't trade it. The owner remembers your name. Closed Sundays.
