Paarl is the birthplace of South African wine culture, home to KWV (the cooperative that shaped the industry), Nederburg (SA's most awarded estate), and Fairview (the estate that proved wine and cheese belong together). The region's granite soils produce world-class Shiraz and Chenin Blanc, and the tasting experiences go well beyond wine -- expect cheese, chocolate, craft beer, and charcuterie paired alongside the vintages. Paarl is 20 minutes from Stellenbosch but feels less crowded and more authentically agricultural.
